Getting ready for your fall camping trips with kids? With a little bit of mindful preparation and planning, you can transition seamlessly from epic summer vacations to beautiful and fun fall camping trips. Check out our RV tips below!
Accept That You’ll Be Packing More
The transition to fall weather often means that mornings and evenings are brisk and cool, while the afternoons may be warmer. This necessitates dressing in layers – which means packing them. Thankfully, you can plan on rewearing a lot of the outer layers from day to day, like a hoodie or jacket, but remember that kids can get dirty fast and may toss their outer layers right on the floor (and then walk all over them) when they’re peeling off to get cooler.
The weather can also be unpredictable, and you may experience rain that you weren’t counting on. Besides ponchos and rain jackets, pack extra shoes and several extra pairs of socks.
Have a Contingency Plan – and Pack a Weather Box
Speaking of rain, you’ll want to have a Plan B in place just in case of inclement weather. Pack a “weather box” – that is, a special box of games and shelf-stable snacks that only get dug into in the event of rain (no exceptions!). Our kids love knowing there’s a Weather Box because it feels like a special treat that only comes when there’s bad weather. It takes the edge off of fun plans being rained out, and you might be surprised that your kids actually look forward to a rainy day!
Make the Most of Daylight
As the days start to shorten, make good on your daytime hours to get in the nature walks and all outdoor exploring. Start your day right with a hearty breakfast, and then don’t waste time getting out the door since you’ll have less daylight.
The sun going down may no longer necessarily signal bedtime, but it can signal s’mores around the campfire or a cozy movie night with a warm fireplace and cups of hot cocoa. But that said, if your kiddos are still young enough to take naps, be mindful of their fatigue levels throughout the day and adjust as necessary.
