5 Tips For RV Trips With Dogs

There’s something special about experiencing the great outdoors behind the wheel of an RV, but the journey gets even better when you take that RV trip with your dog.

All dog lovers out there know how important it is to have your pup by your side, and that includes during RV trips. But riding in an RV isn’t the same as taking the car, and there are a few things to keep in mind regarding how to keep your dog (and yourself) safe and happy while on the road.

Keep reading for tips on making the most of you and your pup’s RV adventure.

Start Slow

Dogs need time to adjust to new environments and situations. To prepare for a long RV trip, start slow and take shorter trips with your pup, even if that just means a few times around the block. Gradually make those trips longer and longer until your dog feels comfortable spending long stretches of time in the RV.

Know What to Pack

Undoubtedly, there are things you never travel without — and the same goes for your dog. When you’re packing for the road, include essentials for them that will make your trip easier and more comfortable for everyone.

Remember to bring:

  • Food
  • Bedding
  • Toys
  • Food and water dishes (non-spill dishes are a lifesaver on road trips)
  • Collar
  • Leash
  • Cleaning supplies (hey, accidents happen)
  • Any medication your dog needs

Having these supplies on-hand will make the RV feel more like home for your dog.

Create a Special Space

At home, your dog probably has a few special spots that they favor. The place where their bed lies, where they eat, and other spots they’ve claimed. In your RV, there should also be places that your dog can call their own — specifically, a designated place for them to ride safely.

Some dogs need a chance to get used to riding in an RV, since it feels different than riding in a car, and this may cause anxiety. In these cases, bringing their crate along could soothe their nerves. If your dog is cool and collected in your RV, it probably won’t take them long to stretch out somewhere — and that should be used as their riding place.

RV trips can get long, so it’s key to make sure your pup is comfortable and content.

Plan Ahead for Dog-Friendly Environments

While many of us love dogs, never assume that they are universally accepted. To make sure that everyone in your family (human and non-human) has a nice time while on the RV trip, plan ahead to ensure you’re staying at dog-friendly campgrounds. Your pooch should be just as welcomed as you are!

Even at dog-friendly campgrounds, though, err on the side of safety and keep your dog leashed at all times. Not only will this keep her from running off, it’ll also prevent any dangerous run-ins with not-so-friendly critters.

Remember to Exercise

For humans, vacation can mean a highly-coveted break from exercise — but that’s definitely not something your dog wants. Just like when you’re at home, your dog needs his daily exercise. Dogs have no concept of vacation, so they’ll expect (and need) just as much stimulation as they’d get on a regular day. And, trust us, you’ll all sleep better if you wear them out during the day!
